In other Southside film related news, the Southside Film Festival is pleased to share a screening that The Common Guild is organising next month at Langside Hall on the 15th November.

In the lead up to Phil Collins' major new project for Queen's Park and Glasgow 2014, The Common Guild and Film and Video Umbrella present a special screening of 'marxism today (prologue)' (2010) followed by a talk with the artist.

The film is a poignant reminder of the extent to which the fault-lines and power struggles of history impact on individual lives. It was premiered at the Berlin Biennale in 2010, and later broadcast on national television in Germany, where its portrayal of teachers of Marxism-Leninism in the former GDR had particular resonance.

Presented in collaboration with Film and Video Umbrella, as part of '25 Frames', a programme of screenings and events marking the organisation's 25th anniversary, in which stand-out pieces from the organisation's past are re-staged and re-evaluated for the present.

This special event finds a richly appropriate setting in Langside Hall, on the edge of Queen's Park, an emblem of the city's distinctive social, cultural and architectural heritage. Phil Collins will be in conversation with Film and Video Umbrella Director, Steven Bode, after the screening. 'marxism today (prologue)' was co-commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella, Cornerhouse, Abandon Normal Devices, Berliner Künstlerprogramm/DAAD, and Berlin Biennale, and produced by Shady Lane Productions. The mighty Wurlitzer cinema organ returns! With Vampyr...

Join us on Sunday 27th October for a unique Halloween themed film screening of Carl Th. Dreyer's Vampyr with live Wurlitzer Cinema Organ accompaniment as part of our Autumn Film Club in partnership with Pollokshaws Burgh Hall and the Scottish Cinema Organ Trust.

Pollokshaws Burgh Hall (2025 Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, G43 1NE) is home to the mighty Wurlitzer Cinema Organ, Scotland’s only cinema organ. The Scottish Cinema Organ Trust (SCOT) dedicate 2 days a week to restoring and maintaining this musical instrument now well into its 8th decade! 

Vampyr is a 1932 French-German horror film, one of the first psychological horror films. It ranks in many circles as one of the greatest horror films of all time (appearing in the top 10 of the Guardian’s list of ‘best horror films of all time’ in 2010). The story centres around Allan Grey, a student of the occult who enters the village of Courtempierre, which is under the curse of a vampire.

Grey arrives in a remote castle and starts seeing weird, inexplicable sights (a man whose shadow has a life of its own, a mysterious scythe-bearing figure tolling a bell, a terrifying dream of his own burial). Things come to a head when one of the daughters of the lord of the castle succumbs to anaemia - or is it something more sinister?

The film will start at 8pm, doors at 7:30pm. Tickets are £6 (£5 for concessions) and are available online from Tickets Scotland soon (booking fee applies) or on the door from Pollokshaws Burgh Hall.

Film Club flyers

Our flyers for Autumn Film Club at The Glad Cafe have arrived and our team of dedicated volunteers will be distributing them across the Southside this weekend. Just in time for our first screening - Heathers on Tuesday 3rd September.

The eagle eyed amongst might have spotted that there's now a 6th screening included on the flyer. This is Robot & Frank which we are screening on Tuesday 15 October in partnership with the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival. This is an exciting additional screening to our other Autumn Film Club ones in partnership with The Glad Cafe and there are more details here.

Film Club returns

We're delighted to announce that film club is back for Autumn 2013! 

Here's the line up for our 5 core Film Club screenings at the Glad Cafe and we have a couple of other screenings planned, details of those will be announced soon.

In September, on Tuesday 3rd we'll be screening Heathers - the 80's cult classic black comedy about high school cliques.

In October, on Tuesday 8th we'll be showing Swedish horror film Let the Right One In/Låt den Rätte Komma In.

For November, there's a chance to catch the brilliant performances from Michael Douglas and Matt Damon in Behind the Candelabra on Tuesday 5th.

In December, there'll be two screenings one on Tuesday 3rd In Bruges and on Sunday 15th something for the kids with The Pirates! In An Adventure with Scientists!

Tickets will be on sale soon - keep an eye out for details. Once they are available you can buy them online from Ticket Scotland and in person at the Glad Cafe and on the door.

The Southside Film Festival in partnership with The Glad Cafe has run a successful film club since October 2012. Our monthly films are screened in the great space at The Glad Cafe on a Tuesday evening at 8pm, with one kids matinee screening per season at 4pm. 

Top 10 Guide

The lovely people at Top Ten Glasgow Guide have put together the list below of the top 10 things to do and see at the Southside Film Festival. You can follow them on twitter @toptenglasgow or facebook for more great Glasgow recommendations.

5. Watch one of the best silent films ever made, Battleship Potemkin, with live accompaniment from the Wurtlizer Cinema Organ at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall on Sun.

6. Get some Bollywood in your life with a Kuch Kuch Hota Hoi, a film partly shot in the Southside. 

7. See the Southside filmmakers of the future on Saturday at the Southside Filmmaker Award screening.

8. Forget Iron Man 3, take the kids to see the kids' classic favourite Iron Giant on Sat afternoon at The Glad Cafe (and your kids can learn how to make Superhero Animation at an animation workshop that morning).  

9. If you want to learn more about the history of cinemas and cinema going on the Southside of Glasgow then don't miss out Cinema Walk at 2pm on Sunday afternoon - sign up in advance and receive the meeting point.

A Million Bricks

In the optimism of the 1960’s people bought new homes in Springfield Park only to find themselves at the heart of a battle when the Troubles broke out. After a night of violence in 1971, six people were killed and Catholic and Protestant families left the last mixed street in West Belfast.

A Million Bricks is the story of a scattered community told by the people themselves and directed and produced by Frank Martin and Seamus Kelters, who lived there. 
They were ordinary people who saw their hopes realised, then dashed within the space of a decade. 

Where once stood a row of houses shared by Protestants and Catholics now stands Belfast’s biggest peace-line, a wall of a million bricks, separating them.

Co Director Frank Martin will travel from Belfast for this screening to introduce the film and take part in a Q&A after the film so don't miss this!






Bernadette: Notes on a Political Journey

Did you know that Bernadette Devlin was once described by an opponent as “Fidel Castro in a mini skirt”? That she punched the Home Secretary in the Houses of Parliament the day after Bloody Sunday? That she was elected MP at 21?

Bernadette Devlin McAliskey has certainly had a tumultuous political career and her political journey continues to this day. Lelia Doolan’s documentary allows her personal and political story to unfold in this atmospheric and evocative film. Using archive footage and a series of interviews with Bernadette herself over a number of years, a complex and intricate picture evolves of a formidable figure of recent Irish politics.

Southside Film Festival is back for one night only!

The first film quiz during the film festival in May was such a hit that we are bringing it back for a film festival fundraiser! 

Do you recognise the lady on this poster and can you name the film? Do you love movies? Then get your team together and get yourself down to The Bungo for 8pm on Thursday 20th September.

Prizes include 2 guest list places for Miaoux Mioux gig on Sat 24 November at The Glad Cafe, 2 GFT cinema tickets, some Cineworld cinema tickets and dinner and wine for 2 at The Bungo. 

Warning: there is no mobile phone reception in the basement of The Bungo so don't expect any help from google!

Entry to the quiz is £2 per person and all proceeds go to Southside Film Festival, a not-for-profit film festival run by volunteers, bringing film back to Southside Glasgow.

The Short Films @ The Chalet which had to be cancelled are going to be shown on Saturday 2nd June at the Chalet.

This is a FREE screening and the programme of Short Films includes:

1. Waste Art (9')
What is waste art? A look into the world of this new and exotic artform, expounded by its practitioners. Directed by Andy Dow.

2. The Land Between Tick and Tock (13')
Nick Padalino, an eccentric New Yorker, owns a fluorescent art museum incentral Amsterdam. ‘A land between Tick and Tock’ is a documentary portraitof Nick and his Parisian girlfriend Michele as they guide the viewer aroundtheir quirky hand made museum of fluorescent wonders. Directed by KateBurton.

3. The Tannery (5'30”)
A recently deceased Fox has a life after death experience. Animated anddirected by Iain Gardener. The Tannery was nominated for Best Animation,BAFTA in Scotland Awards, 2011 and won Best Animation at CFC WorldWideShort Film Festival, Toronto and the Celtic Media Festival 2011. The music wascomposed by Southsider Mick Cooke who appeared at Southside Film Festival'scomposing music for film discussion last year.

4.An Artifical Light (19'40)
A tale of romance and heartache, filmed in Aberdeen last year.Written and directed by Tim Courtney. Starring: Pamela Donald, Davy King,Adam Morrice and Matthew Duncan.

5. Pentecost (11mins)
A young Irish boy faces a difficult choice that may leave him at odds with hissmall community. Written and directed by Peter McDonald, produced byEimear O'Kane. Nominated for Best Live Action Film Oscar, 2012.

6. Tumult (13 mins)A tribe of Norse warriors traipse across a barren land after battle. Bloodied andwounded, their chief is near death. He is about to hand over power to his sonwhen an army of a completely different kind…descends upon them.Written and directed by Johnny Barrington, produced by Rhianna Andrews.

7. Whether the weather (5mins)
Commissioned by Screen Academy Scotland in 2011 to screen at EdinburghInternational Festival and be viewed by Philip Glass, this film was a response toGlass and Regio's collaboration on the Qatsi trilogy. Director Lorna Simpsonand composer Jordan Gilmour worked together to produce a response to theGlass and Regio's work.

8. Out on the Tiles (3'11”)
An inebriated woman pays a visit to the ladies' loo for a cigarette, but noteverything goes to plan....Animated and directed by Anna Pearson. Winner ofBAFTA in Scotland Best Animation Award 2011.

To celebrate Govanhill Baths reopening part of the building earlier this year, Southside Film Festival has put together a programme of some of its favourite short films about swimming. Reichenbach Falls is an action-packed psychological thriller examining the complex relationship between character and creator. DI Jim Buchan is a cop on the edge, Jack Harvey is a successful crime writer with the world at his feet. In Reichenbach Falls, these two former friends are thrown together when a 100-year-old body is discovered beneath the streets of Edinburgh.

While Harvey is on the brink of launching his new novel, St Bernard’s Well, DI Buchan’s murder investigation takes him into the dark Jekyll and Hyde underworld of Edinburgh and a parallel journey into the Scottish Capital’s literary past, leading him to question the very nature of his own existence. The shattering truth will bring the lives of these two very different men together and blow them apart.

The Mystery of the Leaping Fish (25mins) stars Douglas Fairbanks as Coke Ennyday, a scientific detective, loosely based on Holmes, who discovers a contraband of opium (which he eagerly tastes) transported with “Leaping Fishes”... You get the idea, this is a bizarre viewing experience and not what you normally expect from Douglas Fairbanks!

Sherlock Junior (45mins), written, directed, produced and starring Buster Keaton as a love struck detective/projectionist, is not to be missed! This version of this silent comedy classic has a jazzy score from Carl Davis.
